Jan Furman – Executive Director and Youth Program Manager

Jan Furman began her teaching and coaching career in Davis Ca. where she founded and directed the Davis Volleyball Club for 10 years. While at Davis High School, Jan led her teams to 7 straight league titles, 7 Nor Cal Championships, and 9 State Championship playoffs. She left Davis with a 77-0 winning steak. Jan was awarded the National High School Volleyball coach of the Year and in 1998, Jan was inducted into the Chico State Hall of Fame for volleyball and swimming. Jan came to Santa Cruz in 1988 to teach and coach at Cabrillo College. With 10 seasons at Cabrillo, Jan led her teams to 4 Conference Championships and 9 State Playoffs. She was inducted into the Calif. Community College Volleyball Hall of Fame in 2004. Jan has coached multiple athletes receiving full-ride scholarships to Stanford, UCLA, USC, UC Santa Barbara, UOP, San Diego State and many more. Jan retired from full time teaching and coaching at Cabrillo in 2009 but continues to teach Kinesiology and Philosophy of Physical Education classes. She founded Main Beach Volleyball Club in 2002 and in only it’s 2nd season sent 2 of 5 teams to the Junior National Championships. Jan takes pride in the growth of the Main Beach Volleyball Club. Starting in 2002 with 5 girls teams to a club in 2016 of 9 girls teams, 6 boys teams, a beach program with over 50 players and a youth program for 4th thru 8th graders in both the fall and the spring. Jan’s passions are volleyball, photography and mentoring coaches. If she is not in the gym improving an arm swing, or meeting with a player about colleges you will probably find her working out in the yard at her home or with her family in the Napa Valley.

Gabrielle Houston Neville – Director and Girls Program Manager

Gabrielle is currently the women’s head volleyball coach at UC Santa Cruz where she recently took the helm in 2019.  Previously, she ran the Cabrillo College women’s program for 9 years where she amassed an overall record of 230-30 and a Conference record fo 95-1. In 9 seasons she led the Seahawks to 9 Coast Conference Championships and 7  final four appearances and 2 state titles. She hopes to continue her success at the NCAA level at UCSC. Gabby received her B.A. from U.C. Santa Barbara and her Master’s Degree from Arizona State University in Exercise Science where she was also a volleyball instructor for 2 years. Prior to Cabrillo, Gabrielle was a competitive beach volleyball player with a AAA rating. Gabby is in her 16th season coaching for Main Beach Volleyball Club. Her Main Beach coaching success includes Gold and  Bronze medals at Junior Nationals and multiple qualifications for the Junior National tournament. Gabby has also coached at Mt. Madonna High where her team went from last place in the SCCAL to winning 2 CCS Championships and a California State title. Gabrielle has over 25 years experience as a Head Coach, and is also a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and a certified Sports Performance coach through the USA Weightlifting Federation. When she is not in the gym teaching volleyball, she is in the weight room helping athlete’s to prepare physically for their upcoming seasons. Born and raised in Santa Cruz, teaching and coaching volleyball is her passion and with growing up on the beach, the sport has always been an integral part of her life.

Justin Bates- Boys Program Manager

Justin Bates comes from Northridge where he played for SMBC. After high school, Justin made the move to Santa Cruz where he played on the men’s DIII team for three years as a middle. During this time the team made it to the NCAA DII Playoffs. After graduating from UCSC with a degree in computer engineering and science he started coaching. 

Currently, Justin coaches for the girl’s program heads up the Santa Cruz High program and coaches the boys 13/14’s team. Justin works hard to instill strong fundamentals in his players as well as discipline and the importance of fun. 

When Justin isn’t coaching he can be found playing beach volleyball or programming.
